Frankie had his corrective eyelid surgery!

We are happy to announce that Frankie received his corrective eyelid surgery September 29^th and has recovered amazingly! His eyelids however are still a little swollen and has another week before the sutures will be removed. Even with the swelling and sutures his quality of life has drastically improved. He now holds his head up high when walking and enjoys being able to actually see his surroundings. He has become more playful and actually acknowledges the toys his foster mom bought for him! We are excited for him to be fully healed from the surgery and be able to finally be placed in his forever home. He is still looking for an adoptive home!

Here is a note from his foster mom, the morning after the surgery: 

"FRANKIE is doing great!! Last night he was playing with his ball and rope, bringing it to us to tug and throw. This morning he had a little muck in his eyes from sleeping, but he was LOVING his walk!! He actually had his head up and was looking at everything and trotting. What a difference. Great dog, amazing attitude. Way to go 11,11 - the surgery has given him literally a new look on life!!"

Honey & Kingston in Montreal's "The Gazzette"

Honey and Kingston stared in Montreal's local news paper "The Gazzette" today as part of an article about the past event we participated in The 4th annual Le Repère Uni N.D.G. Pet Fest September 19th 2009.

Meet Frankie:

Frank is a young American Bull dog who was going to be euthanized at just over a year old because of a congenital eye lid deformation. Frank has eyelid enthropia of the upper and lower eyelids on each eye. This means that his eyelids roll inwards and with every blink the hair on them rub against his eyes. Leaving his eye extremely irritated and even caused a massive ulcer in his left eye. This condition is extremely painful, especially the ulcer which is further irritated by being rubbed by the eyelids. Frank has lived his entire life in excruciating pain, pain most of us have never even had to endure. Frank endures this pain every day. Because of how sore his eyes are, he won't even open them up, leaving him blind. This condition can be fixed with an (expensive) surgery that corrects the deformation, plan to have done. Unfortunately he cannot get this surgery until the ulcer in his eye has healed (if it even does). The ulcer in his right eye is so bad that he may lose the eye. He also has a major infection in his right ear, which is extremely uncomfortable. On top of everything, he also had food allergies, which is also very uncomfortable for him. Food allergies in animals shows up on the skin and makes them very itchy.

Despite all of this, Frank is an amazing good nature dog who continues to enjoy life. He is loyal, affectionate and a big sweet-heart. He gets along amazingly with cats, dogs, kids, you name it. He is honestly a really great dog, it is such a shame he has had to live like this for so long.

Since being rescued Frank is now on intensive treatments: He receives antibacterial eye drops twice a day, to prevent the ulcer from becoming infected. Serum in his eye for his ulcer every 4 hours, to help the ulcer heal. Two types of pain relievers for his eyes, eye drops and oral medication. Ear treatments for the infection twice a day. He has also been switched to an expensive veterinary brand hypoallergenic diet for his allergies.

Frank will be getting his surgery as soon as possible, once we determine if we can save the eye with the ulcer or not.

*This is an inherited condition, which could have been prevented with good breeding. Unfortunately back-yard breeders produce a lot of very sad cases like this. Please if you are going to buy a pure breed (and choose not to adopt). Do not go to a pet store or back-yard breeder, go to a reputable registered breeder.

Kingston update

Yesterday Kingston had a big day of surgery! He was neutered, had and umbilical hernia that was repaired, had a dental done and was microchipped. He teeth were in pretty bad shape and a few even had to be extracted. 

He is now recovering very well and back to his normal self. 

Diamond spayed

Diamond was spayed yesterday and has recovered very well!

She was also tested for FIV/FeLV and is negative, good news!

September 4th Fundraiser, a huge success!

As many of you know, September 4th we held our first fundraiser "Party Like an Animal, For The Animals" at Vinyl. We had a great turn out, everyone had an amazing time, the event was a huge success. We just wanted to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who came and supported the rescue, or who was unable to come but spread the word about it. Also thank you to everyone who not only came but also donated, or bought our T-Shirts/Pins! This rescue entirely relies on you guys to help us out, and therefore directly helps the animals our rescue saves. We would be unable to help any of these animals with out you!

• Lora Minicucci: The rescues public relations and event planner. Thank you for helping us through everything and the many midnight veranda meetings, or 8am phone calls. Meet Kingston: Our Adult, Male Shih-Tzu for Adoption

Name: Kingston

Age: Adult (Under 5 years old)

Sex: Male (To be Neutered September 10th 2009)

Good With: Cats and other dogs, children to be tested.

Kingston was given over to us after someone found him and was unable to find his previous owners. We have also made efforts to find the previous owner unsuccessfully. However it is debated that the person who 'found' him and gave him over to us just did not want his dog anymore. Kingston is a very very sweet boy and just gets along with everyone and everything. He has been veterinary checked and is healthy. He as been vaccinated against Basics, Lepto, Rabies and Kennel Cough. He has also had a treatment of Revolution for the treatment and prevention of: fleas, mites and intestinal parasites. He will also be neutered and have a dental September 10th (as his teeth have some tartar). Kingston is ready to find a nice home to settle into and complete with his unconditional love.

They are all doing amazing and have overcome thier eye infections. They are now ready for adoption. Pepper and Penguin are adapting to indoor life amazingly and love to purr. Pickle however is still very nervous and will take alot more work.
